A Chair Is Never Just A Chair

I endeared myself to a nation I did not birth
I ingested its creed, I injected its Constitution
I sounded its clarion call, I laid claim to its exceptionalism
I did not call into question its revisionist history
I removed its lies from peripheral vision
I colored it with colorless Crayola
Without hesitancy, I remained silent in the darkness of injustice
I did not lust after Lady Liberty because I took her
for granted like a lady’s virtue available for purchase
When this gopher finally lifted his head, he saw
his nation for what it was and for what it is.
A two-party political system that takes him for granted
the way Thomas Jefferson seized upon Sally Hemings

I discovered a chair is never just a chair
