Fish Fins

From the ocean’s bottom,
surface water above is clearer.
Imagine little children—
how they feel underneath an
ocean of adults having swarmed
the city’s boardwalk.

Faith is essential in a child’s
journey, when there’s not
a series of mileposts to mark
from here to there; even there
to here whenever destiny is to
be approximated.

Boardwalks are smother
than young hearts. Imagine
small fish, teeming together,
trying to stay situated in the
collective? Not to stay is of
the most dangerous order.

There is a difference between
fish fins and human hands.
Fish fins facilitate direction
whereas human hands relate
to connection. An ocean is big,
boardwalks long; faith essential.
